Although the entire show was really well done, my favourite pieces were the writing in the staircase and the striped room. Barbara Kruger's striking black as white words are stretched and squished around the staircase inside the building. The quotes are quirky but actuate and the photo below has my favourite. It means that one shouldn't be just a bystander in life and not just view it as entertainment. Even the bad events are worth while to take part in. Secondly, the room of stripes stood out to me simply because it reminded me of one scene in the movie Across the Universe where the room turns into the sky and everything is made of clouds.
Compromise has been something I have always struggled with. I have been forced to realize as I’ve grown up is that you can’t do everything. Since, I believe I am a well balanced person who enjoys a wide variety of activities and hobbies, letting go of even those that don’t mean so much to me is difficult. The quote “you can do anything, but not everything” perfectly outlines my frustration because I know if I want to do something, I will ensure I do it well, but not everything can be given 100% simultaneously. The reason this has become more of a prominent realization is because as I narrow my path toward the things I enjoy the most, I really struggle with leaving other things behind. An example of this would be in school; I equally love my art courses, sciences and math, pe, and humanities, but I can’t specialize in all of them at the same time. Often when making these sorts of decisions, I am at a stalemate when I think about who I could be if I chose one over the other. I have learnt if I don’t pick one, I won’t be anything. I have learnt to let go of my multiple selves that are based off of could-haves.
I am mindful of other people in terms of caring for others and not offending people, but not in terms of need approval or seek attention from others. I am confident enough to speak my opinion and stand on my own, yet I will never say or do anything to hurt people intentionally. I also believe that I am a well balanced person who enjoys a huge variety of things. It isn’t the activities that define who I am, it’s the fact that I don’t like one thing more than the other, which makes me intensely curious about so many things. One negative thing that comes out of being curious and always asking questions is that I think too much. This is negative because I often think about one thing so much that I will make something out of nothing. I will ruin something great by worrying. Overthinking makes me second guess myself and question my confidence which starts out very strong.
The best part about this project was how we could take it in any direction, as long as a mechanical object was included. I decided to base mine off a typewriter as they are historically impactful and very important to technology as we know it today. In its time, the typewriter was revolutionary. It sped up businesses and made communication that much faster. Also provided social Liberty for women as it opened up many secretary positions in the workforce. I decided to include hand lettering in my project to express its importance with words such as groundbreaking and communication. I also collaged a bit to add texture and make it have more depth. The little men playing golf added to my piece was to emphasize the business and work relatedness of the typewriter. I added watercolour to add colour without making it too heavy. My mechanical object it cross hatched with pen so one could stand out more, while the other is simply outlined so it recedes into the background and you can see the overlapping face more clearly. Without my intention, I did two things in my project that turned out to have deeper meaning. First of all, it's actually rather ironic I used hand lettering in my project as the typewriter was one of the first steps to removing hand writing as common practice. Now, it's rare someone will write down a letter, essay or even a grocery list. Secondly, the face before "communication" has two people sitting in a canoe. These people actually bonded with chimps and learned to communicate with them, which goes along well with the theme. My final touch was to have that line river going through the centre to unite the picture more and bring all the elements together.
I really enjoyed doing this project because it included two things I love; drawing people and with pencil crayons. Pencil crayons are my favourite medium to draw with. They are smooth and I love bright colour. I also loved working with the light watercolour because it does not take away from the face. This project is complete because I am satisfied with my colour scheme and all mediums I used. For the nose and mouth, I used blind contour. For the eyes, hair and body I used broken contour. I did not use my classmates drawings of the features because I felt they did not go well with my style of drawing. Also I wanted to have large features and the drawing I received was small. My colour scheme is something I am really proud of. I used cool colours for shadows and warm colours for lights on skin. The background, hair and shirt I decided to switch up and do it differently so I did a subtle pattern and I used light watercolours. I believe I was successful in making it interesting and having something to draw your eye to because of the soft background and vivid face. I also think I effectively used the mediums correctly and many different types, both the pencil crayon and water colours and even a bit of collage in the tie. I could improve evening the background colour so it is not so splotchy and making the lines on the shirt the same thickness the whole way across. I struggled with using the watercolours without making it splotchy and I think I just need more practice. Overall, a very fun project that I could use many different mediums on which was amazing.
